Biography
Eleanor Rose Whitfield was born on the 14th of March, 1946, in Harare, Zimbabwe, the eldest of four children. From a young age she showed a rare gift for making people feel seen — a quality that would define every chapter of her life.
She trained as a primary school teacher and spent thirty-eight years in the classroom, guiding more than two thousand children through their first steps in reading and writing. Former pupils remember her not for the lessons on the board, but for the way she noticed the quiet child in the corner and made sure they knew they mattered.
In 1971 she married Thomas Whitfield, a civil engineer, and together they raised three children. Weekends were spent in her beloved garden, where roses, lavender, and vegetables grew side by side in cheerful disorder. Neighbours knew that a knock on Eleanor's door meant leaving with an armful of flowers and a slice of cake.
After retiring, Eleanor and Thomas moved to Cape Town, South Africa, where she continued to volunteer at a community literacy centre, teaching adults to read well into her seventies. She believed it was never too late to learn, and never too late to be kind. She passed away peacefully on the 2nd of June, 2024, surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy measured not in possessions but in the countless lives she touched.
